Celebrating a Golden Birthday: Gift Ideas & How They Work

They only happen once in a lifetime, so make sure you go big on your Golden Birthday. ‘But what on earth is a Golden Birthday?’ we hear you google. Read on...

What is a Golden Birthday?

A Golden Birthday happens when your age matches the day of the month you were born on. For example, you turn 25th on the 25th. Or 19 on the 19th. 10 on the 10th. 28 on the 28th… you get it.

But why is a Golden Birthday significant? Partly because it only happens once, and some cultures believe it is a birthday that brings good luck and fortune, and others think it’s a time to look back and reflect on your life (which might be tricky if you're born on the 1st).

Oh, and it’s also sometimes called a Champagne birthday, just to add to the confusion.

Gift ideas for a Golden Birthday

What to get someone for the Golden, or Champagne, birthday? We don’t want to state the obvious, but gold is always a good idea. Gold jewellery is always a winner - why not personalise it with the magic number?

Or if you’re one of those fancy people who call it a ‘Champagne Birthday’, you could add their age or initials to a champagne bottle label, or even a cork. A personalised pop, if you like.

Having a Golden Birthday party?

What theme should you have for a Golden Birthday Party? Hmmm tricky one. Just kidding. If there is ever a time to go all out with gold, glitter and general amazing sparkliness, this is it.

Other milestone Birthdays

Traditionally, 18, 30, 40, 50 and 60 are all major birthday events. But we say, every birthday should be a big one. Turning 43? Go wild!

DOUBLE Golden Birthdays

So, it seems someone got annoyed that Golden Birthdays only happen once, so they invented the DOUBLE Golden Birthday - when you turn double the age of the day you were born on. For example, if you turn 24 on the 12th, or 30 on the 15th. Got it? Good.

It also means you get double the presents.*

* We actually just made that up, but why not try it anyway?

Diamond/Platinum Birthdays

Paying attention? Here goes. A "Diamond Birthday" or "Platinum Birthday" occurs when you turn the same age as the last two digits of your birth year. Sooo, if you were born in 1980, It’ll be on your 80th birthday. If you were born in 1992, it will be celebrated on your 92nd. If you were born in 2006, you’ve already celebrated yours, sorry. But why not treat yourself to a belated pressie anyway…
