The need for creativity
Hi I'm Beth, designer-maker and owner of FERN. A design led, concrete homeware and studio waste jewellery brand based in Hertfordshire, UK.
I can’t remember a time when I didn’t make, create, design or think of doing any of those things. I grew up in a family of designers and artists. My dad was an architect and my Mum a kitchen designer. Both worked from home over the years and both hand drew their designs. Our house was always filled with art, sculpture and objects made by my three sisters and I, alongside pieces collected from all around the world. There was always a designated art space at home where I could pretty much create as I pleased whenever I chose to.
I have followed various paths since my teens including studying motor vehicle technology at college, working as a piano technician, and many a late night front of house in various restaurants but I've always had to design and make in order to fulfil the creative part of me so about ten years ago I took to making products and jewellery. Now here I am, in an old coal shed in my back garden. I’ve made it look a bit nicer than the dirty brick building it once was, but I spend most of my day in here, covered in concrete and dust.
Individually designed
All of the products I make are individually designed and made, by me, in this little building.
The influence and style of my designs comes predominantly from brutalism. Clean geometric lines, mixed with smooth round edges, form the basis of all of my products.
I create master objects from a variety of materials. I then finish, seal and make silicone moulds from these objects for small scale repeat production.
I work mainly with sustainable Portland cement, mixed with fine aggregates, to cast with. I also use casting stone depending on the colour I wish to achieve in the final product. I use water based or natural aggregate pigments to colour all of my pieces and I use the waste concrete, from this casting process, to cast pieces for jewellery items.
FERN homeware products form a cohesive range of pigmented concrete objects.
All homeware products are intended to be beautiful together, in mixed groups, or as individual items.
